Song of the Day: “Song for the Lonely”

One of Cher’s best modern songs is her hit, “Song for the Lonely.” It features the wide vocals that we’ve come to expect from her along with some more modern elements (though the music is actually a little reminiscent of another hit, “If I Could Turn Back Time”). I wasn’t a big fan of the blond platinum hair (Cher just doesn’t seem herself without that long black hair!), but the song itself is absolutely lovely.

It starts out with those hopeful lyrics, “When you’re standing on the edge of nowhere, there’s only one way up so your heart’s gotta go there.” And it just keeps going up from there, with lines like “I’m right beside you,” and “You don’t have to look no more,” as well as the one we all love to hear during heartbroken times, “It’s going to be alright.” So yeah, the lyrics are definitely simple, but simple can be good, as evidenced here. Honestly, would you rather hear intricate poetry when you’re brokenhearted and battle-scarred, or would you rather hear that someone is simply there for you? For me, it’s definitely the latter (though the former is always appreciated!).
